How many days per week should I get physical therapy treatments?
The number of days per week that a patient should go to physical therapy treatments will depend on several factors, including the patient's specific condition, their stage of recovery, and the goals of the physical therapy treatment plan.
In general, physical therapy treatment plans may involve 1-3 sessions per week, with each session lasting anywhere from 45-60 minutes. The frequency of treatment sessions may vary depending on the patient's condition and their response to treatment. For example, patients who are recovering from a recent injury or surgery may need more frequent sessions in the early stages of recovery, while patients with chronic conditions may require ongoing therapy sessions at a lower frequency.
It is important to follow the recommendations of the physical therapist in terms of the frequency of treatment sessions, as they will have a thorough understanding of the patient's needs and goals. Patients should also communicate regularly with their physical therapist to ensure that the treatment plan is effective and making progress towards their goals.
As much as increased treatment frequency can be helpful early on, a decreased frequency can be helpful as treatment progresses. The research based OTAGO fall prevention program found that older seniors continued to benefit from monthly (or even lower frequency) in-home physical therapy visits to progress exercises as appropriate, help the patient feel accountable, or modify any exercises that might be causing issues. So, instead of looking at physical therapy treatment frequency as set in stone, it may be more helpful to think of it as variable based on your needs at that time.
In summary, the number of days per week that a patient should go to physical therapy treatments will depend on the specific needs and goals of the patient, as well as their response to treatment. It is important to follow the recommendations of the physical therapist and communicate regularly to ensure that the treatment plan is effective and safe.
